The tulip poplar is Tennessee’s official state tree and one of the most iconic natives in our region. These trees are known for their strong, straight trunk and stately, symmetrical canopy structure. Their distinctive, four-pointed leaves are easy to recognize. Tulip poplars produce green-yellow cup-shaped flowers in spring, followed by warm golden foliage in fall. They grow at a moderate pace and do best in well-drained, slightly acidic soil. Reaching 80–100 feet tall with a 30–50 foot spread, these trees are best suited for spacious yards where they have room to flourish.
